Workshops, conferences

On June, 9, 2004, a seminar was held under the Project "Biomass energy for Heating and Hot Water Supply in the Republic of Belarus" (BYE/03/G31).

The seminar's main goal is to acquaint the specialists in the sphere of effective use of energy and efficient utilization of wood waste with the international experience in collecting and transporting the wood waste used as fuel for generating heat and electric energy.

Biomass energy

Another important goal of the seminar is to discuss with respect to the Republic of Belarus the technologies for collecting, processing and transporting the wood waste produced by harvesting, cleaning and sanitary felling operations, and the potential for using the machinery and equipment manufactured in the Republic for these purposes. The issues discussed at the seminar are of key importance for resolving the problems pertaining to the wide-scale use of wood waste at the country's power generation facilities.

The Project entitled in brief "Biomass Energy" is the first full-scale project of this kind, being implemented in the Republic, financed by the Global Ecological Fund. The project implementation period is 4 years.

The Project will carry out a number of organizational and technical activities aimed at eliminating the obstacles for a wider use of wood waste as fuel, including the operation of 6 demonstration facilities with 5 existing boiler plants of various capacities to be converted from fossil to wood fuel. All demonstration facilities are located in the "clean" regions of the Republic precluding the use of wood waste contaminated with radionuclides. Another demonstration facility is an enterprise designed for collecting, processing, and delivering felling waste to boiler plants for combustion.

This seminar was directly related to the latter demonstration project.

The seminar was attended by the representatives of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus, the UN Development Programme, the UN European Commission, the Committee on Energy Efficiency, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the specialists from the enterprises of the Ministry of Forestry, the Bellesboumprom Concern, the scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus, the Belarusian National Technical University, the Belarusian State Technological University, the representatives from large industrial enterprises, the Project experts and the representatives of the mass media (TV, radio, information agencies, newspapers, magazines). The total of 65 people took part in the seminar activities.

The papers presented and the discussion that took place at the round table session demonstrated a high degree of interest displayed by the Belarusian industrial enterprises and organizations both in implementing the Project and contributing in the work towards a wide-scale use of biomass for the purposes of centralized heat supply in the Republic aimed at strengthening the energy safety of our state.

The seminar was conducted within the framework of the Project that had been developed with the active participation of the Committee on Energy Efficiency of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus, , and the UN Development Programme, the UN Economic Commission for Europe that initiated the Project, has assisted and continues to assist in its implementation.

The Belarusian Project Partner is the Committee on Energy Efficiency of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus that also cofinances the Project.

The "Biomass Energy" Project is also aimed at achieving a global effect reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases through substituting fossil fuels by renewable fuels including wood fuel.

Seminar Program

Seminar objectives:

  • Discuss international experience of collection, processing and transportation of wood waste, used as fuel for heat and power production.
  • Discuss technologies of forest residues (during harvesting and forest maintenance) collection processing and transportation applicable to the conditions of the Republic of Belarus. Learn the possibilities of local equipment production for these purposes.
