Editorial: Promising signals to save our planet

During Finland's EU Presidency this autumn has showed promising signals to achieve a global front to combat climate change. The signals  may be of importance in reaching more global, long-term agreements which include international and global cooperation in developing and applying clean technologies.

ENERGY POLICY

Andris Piebalgs, Energy Commissioner of the European Commission

A new energy policy for Europe - a basis for a global energy agenda

In March 2006, the Member States of the EU gave a new beginning to the energy policy in Europe. If Europe could agree new policy's clearly identified energy goals and priorities and pursue them rigorously with a single voice, it can lead the new global energy agenda, not follow it, says Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.

A launch of Environment Dialogue provides

New basis for EU-Russian environmental cooperation

An agreement on terms of reference for the Environment Dialogue initiates a new era of intensified collaboration between the EU and Russia on environmental protection and nature conservation. The agreement fosters sustainable development both in Russia and the EU, says Jan-Erik Enestam, Minister of the Environment,  Finland

ENERGY AUDITING

Heikki Vaisanen, Senior Adviser, Ministry of Trade and Industry
Improving energy efficiency and integration of renewable energies through methods of energy auditing

Finland's high-quality energy audits have been a success story. Besides resulting in high energy savings, the audits have given valuable new knowledge on the cost-effective energy saving measures and integrating renewable energies with energy auditing. It has still an enormous potential as a tool to fight climate change, says Heikki Vaisanen, Senior Adviser, Ministry of Trade and Industry.

SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY

Millennium Technology Prize winner's invention provides

Improving the quality of life of millions of people in terms of sustainable development

The 2006 Millennium Technology Prize was awarded to Professor Shuji Nakamura for his invention of new revolutionary sources of light - bright-blue, green and white LEDs and a blue laser  - that makes significant energy savings possible. Furthermore, innovations based on his invention can be used in the sterilization of drinking water and for storing data in much more efficient ways.

Lahti Region and Business Park provide
Solid base to create environmental technology and business

By providing first-class working environment for companies in the field of environmental technology and business, the Lahti Region is becoming the most important centre of environmental business in Finland. The progress is based on a new cluster based networking model consisting of regional companies and other organizations.

Awarded technology and business expertise
Utilization of biogases into electricity and heat on site

Greenvironment Oy has developed and provides advanced solutions for burning and utilization of biogases. The micro turbine based technology converts gases into heat and electricity on site - in farms and landfills. Recently, Euroleader Award was granted to Greenvironment as recognition for strong innovation evidence and product development and marketing.

R&D with new gasification test equipment provides
Competitive production of second generation biofuels

VTT has launched gasification equipment designed for the development of second generation transport biofuels. In the process, synthesis gas will be refined from biomass for the production of diesel fuels. The work involves also the development of new solutions for gas turbine and fuel cell power plants, as well as for the application of hydrogen for transport purposes.

Increasing share of biomass in co-firing
Power plants find the most profitable fuel combinations

With the help of methods developed by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland solid fuel fired power plants may enhance their process follow-up and clarify the cost impacts of different fuel combinations. Savings for some of Finland's power plants have been be very significant. Nearly every co-fired power plant in Finland is looking to increase the use of biomass fuels for environmental and economic reasons.

ENERGY SYSTEMS

Useful information for decision makers

LCA study provides comparison of different energy systems

World Energy Council's LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) study, completed under leadership of Finnish experts, gives relative characteristic features of various primary energy sources related to decision-making. The comparison is based on results of LCA studies during last 10 - 15 years.
