Editorial: We must take sustainable technology in our hands

During Finland s EU Presidency last autumn showed promising signals to achieve a global front to combat climate change. In this February the Environment Council adopted a set of conclusions that set out the key elements the EU considers the global agreement should contain.

Cleantech Finland"!  boosting environmental business
Finland is to take the lead in environmental business

The national action plan for environmental business in Finland aims at making cleantech a cornerstone of Finnish industry and Finland the leading country in environmental business by 2012. Finland has every potential to achieve this goal and the necessary strategic intent is emerging, says Mr. Jukka Noponen, Executive Director of Sitra s Environmental Program.



Finnish ecocity for the future in China

Finnish and Chinese actors are in cooperation creating a concept for building a small ecocity in China. It will utilize the most advanced technology and products available in design and construction so that all aspects are based on sustainable principles. The concept of the EcoCity will be introduced in  Live in Future Home Today - Finnish High-Tech EcoCity seminar in Tianjin in April.

REACH opens new opportunities to boost European competitiveness

VTT has highlighted the possibilities that are raised by the European new chemical legislation REACH. The VTT s report encourages to respond to the research challenges which the REACH is going to open. The results can form a solid basis for future business activity and to improve competitiveness. The success, however, depends on the activity of European actors.

BIOFUELS

Environmentally soundly and cost-efficiently
First plants producing ethanol from food waste in progress

St1 Biofuels Oy s first plant producing ethanol from waste generated by the Finnish food processing industry will be in operation by this summer in Lappeenranta. Next plant will be completed in Kotka. During 2007 St1 aims at building several decentralized  biofuel  plants in Finland. The plants utilize a new process that makes ethanol production profitable even on a small scale at the site of origin of the waste.


UPM plans to begin production of biodiesel

UPM is planning to begin liquid biofuels production and is currently developing the business concept and related technical solutions. The investment decision on the first commercially significant production plant can be expected in the next few years. Fuel production is based on biomass gasification. The main raw material for the process will be fuel wood and production by-products.

 

EMISSION-FREE ENERGY

First in the Nordic countries
Hydrogen power plant produces sustainable energy in Finland

The first hydrogen power plant in the Nordic countries was taken in to use last autumn in Joutseno. The plant producing steam and electricity to the Finnish Chemicals factory is one of the cleanest power plants in the world.  The fuel of the power plant comes from the Finnish Chemicals factory as a side product of the process that makes electricity production profitable.



AW-Energy developed
Advanced technology for harnessing ocean energy

AW-Energy Oy has developed a technology that captures the kinetic energy of bottom waves using a specially designed bottom-mounted moving  wing . The captured energy is converted to electricity using traditional technologies. The WaveRoller technology has been successfully tested in the European Marine Energy Centre and pilot plant is in progress. 


Megawatt-class plants can be commerzialized in the middle of the next decade

The EU has awarded a grant of EUR 5.8 million to a European consortium to develop large Solid Oxide Fuel Cell -based (SOFC) power plants. The SOFC-based power plants are currently under rapid development. Success of the units is based e.g. on their multi-fuel capabilities extending from bio-fuels to gasification gas and natural gas.

Harnessing solar energy for the future by artificial and natural photosynthesis

Solar driven production of environmentally clean electricity, hydrogen and other fuels, is considered as the only sustainable solution for global energy needs around 2050 and beyond. Recently, substantial progress has been made in understanding and mimicking the natural processes, sufficient for scientists to be confident that they could use them to produce fuels on a commercial scale.


Biofuel cell
A compact, inexpensive, disposable power source for consumer applications

In printable biofuel cells enzymes convert the energy bound in the renewable fuels - sugar, alcohols, etc. - into electricity. They are viable power sources for the rapidly proliferating RFID tags used in the medical sector and logistics. Applications include plasters containing a memory circuit and measuring electrode for temperature, and sensors monitoring food quality.


Towards emission-free combustion technology

Finnish and international partners develope technology that will allow fuels including coal to be utilized more efficiently in energy production - even without emitting any carbon dioxide. The new technology fossil fuels are combusted with pure oxygen separated from the air. Carbon dioxide can be liquefied after cooling and stored in geological formations. A larger co-operation project, with in the size of 30-50 megawatts is being planned around year 2010.


CLIMATE IN FINLAND

Finland*s greenhouse gas emissions below Kyoto target in 2005

According to the figures submitted by Statistics Finland to the EU, in 2005 greenhouse gas emissions in Finland were below the target level of the Kyoto Protocol for the first time since the beginning of the 1990s. In 2005, greenhouse gas emissions amounted to almost three per cent less than in 1990. The low emissions resulted mostly from reasons other than actual measures aimed at their reduction.

Most Finns believe climate change is a genuine, man-made problem and they are ready to take measures against its unwanted consequences. This is the key finding of the first extensive survey of the Finns position on climate change. The study, Plenty of weather today: climate change and the citizen is based on the views of more than one thousand Finns on climate change.

Sufficiency of electricity

The production and consumption of electricity must have equilibrium in the system at all times.  In Finland, just as in other Nordic countries, peak consumption of electricity occurs during the coldest winter days in the morning and afternoon. In Finland, electricity consumption has been increasing for several years at a steady annual pace of slightly over two per cent, which is slower than economic growth.
